SUMMARY:Holdrege Summer Reading Kick-Off Program
DESCRIPTION:Date:  Tuesday\, May 23\, 2023 \nWhere: Holdrege Area Public Library \nTime:  5:00 – 7:00 p.m. \nReading is extremely critical throughout the year\, but it becomes even more critical during the summer months. Summer break is typically a time for children to relax and enjoy not having schoolwork to worry about. However\, all this free time can lead to the “summer slide\,” otherwise known as a regression in academic proficiency.\nOn average\, about 20% of their school-year gains in reading over the summer months. Experts have found that novelty stimulates the brain and promotes learning. \nTo help combat the “summer slide” for the children of Phelps County\, LyonHeart will be teaming with the\nHoldrege Area Public Library to launch our newest program\, Traveling Tails\, in conjunction with their summer reading kickoff program. \n

SUMMARY:In the Presence of Horses - Communication
DESCRIPTION:Communication requires listening with our eyes. Join our herd in learning how communication plays a vital role in learning horsemanship skills or husbandry skills (as they are called in the equestrian world.) Your child will have the opportunity to enter into the “unspoken” world of a horse as they learn and practice what it takes to take care of them. Skills will include learning their non-verbal language\, grooming\, picking out hooves\, haltering and the proper way to lead a horse.  As your child will discover how a horse communicates their needs to them\, your child will discover how to verbally communicate his/her needs in a responsible manner. On the final day\, the youth will apply their skills as they “communicate responsibly” the needs of their horse and human teammates through the Challenge Course. \nTarget skills: communication\, responsibilities\, and unique horse vocabulary.  \nDate: July 17\, 18\, & 19 – Three consecutive days \nTime:  Choose 9:00 am to 11:00 am OR 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm \nGroup size:  Limited to six (6) with a minimum of two youth \nGrades:  2nd grade & Up \nT-shirt Included \nProgram Fee: $60 for 6 hours of individual attention within a group of six. \n\nThanks to a special grant from the Women’s Giving Group\, any youth living in Phelps County or attending school in Phelps County may participate for a program fee of $30.00. No program assistance application needed.\n\nProgram assistance available: Program Assistance Application must be submitted. Families will be notified once all supporting documents has been submitted. Families only need to apply one time per year. \nRequirements: \n\nProgram fees are due on the first day.\nClosed-toed shoes.\nSigned Release of Liability by parent/guardian (to be emailed to you.
